Vannessa Vasquez talks nightmares on the set of Sorrow

By Alexandria Gonzalez

Vannessa Vasquez deals with the nightmares of high school drama in Hulu Network’s original series “East Los High,” but nothing compares to the horrors she faced on the set of Sorrow.

“It was creepy. Even the place where we shot felt haunted,” she said. “Either it was or the set design crew did an amazing job.”

Vasquez said she had nightmares almost every day on set. The nightmares were so intense, she said, that she reached such a level of intense reality while filming that she had to take a day off to reset.

“The hardest scene I had to film is one where I’m chained to a bed,” Vasquez said. “It required a lot of force and emotional intensity.”

Thankfully, she was able to rest and take in the beautiful scenery in Utah where several scenes were filmed. Once Vasquez reset, she jumped right back into the intensity of the film.

Vasquez said she is now used to taking on a character for a television series, but to dive into character for a film took a different approach.

“The cool thing about a series is that you get to grow with your character for a long time and see no ending, unless you die on the show,” she said. “In a movie, you know what happens to your character, because there is an end and a beginning.”

However different the two jobs may be, Vasquez said she enjoys them both. She dedicates herself to her character and grows with them in both settings. She will also said she feels honored to now appear in both a series and a film on Hulu network since Hulu announced it would begin streaming Sorrow mid-May.

Sorrow will premiere next month on Tuesday, April 21, at River Oaks Theater in Houston, Texas and on Amazon Prime. Vasquez said she is excited to share the finished product with audiences across the country next month, because it carries an important message.

“Of course I hope the horror fans enjoy the slasher effects in our film, but more than anything, I hope people understand that you shouldn’t mess with people, because you never know just what a person is capable of,” she said. “I hope they enjoy the journey of learning how to find a hero within yourself even when you feel like no one has your back and learning how to take back your life from things that have tried to rob you from it.”
